In showcasing a unique digital immersive studio, on Wed. Sept. 24, Ambrose Trataris (aka Cy Berspace) presented Electric Apostles. Held in the Judy from 6 P.M. – 8 P.M., the event celebrated the opening of the video frieze feature, including a live performance by Trataris.
A video frieze is a horizontal projected video display, oftentimes continuous. Electric Apostles showed a variety of performers of many types from around the world, coming to life using an embodied virtual reality avatar.
Trataris’ work centered around the pairing of virtual reality sensors to replicate the body’s movement in real time through VRChat. This technology is still experimental.
“So at the beginning, I do a scan of the space,” Trataris said. “It’s taking all the visual data mixed with the data of my body connected to the sensors.”
Trataris wore eight sensors, one being the headset itself, and two being the controllers. The other five included each knee, each foot, and one around the waist. With the Oculus headset on, Trataris can see the VR club through the Oculus and each sensor had a camera on it.
The works was up in the Judy from Sept. 22 – Oct. 3.
The video work showcased featured music by Dollii and performances by CA based drag kings VERA!, Skirt C, Mudd the Two Spirit, Jota Mercury, and Cy Berspace, and performances by VRChat nightlife producers and cultural bearers Skoot, Ru, Tilly, and Dust Bunny, as well as 3D scans of NY based Drag performers Julie J, Sweaty Eddie, and Tuna Melt.
